On The Buses (1969 - 1973)
On the 28th of February 1969 an icon of British comedy first hit television screens in Britain. The sound of a bus bell being rung followed by Bob Grant saying:'Hold very tightly please' led into the rolling of the opening credits for On The Buses.Created by Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney, On The Buses was to prove to be a legendary success featuring bus driver Stan Butler (Reg Varney) and his conductor Jack Harper (Bob Grant) and their escapades working for the Luxton and District Bus Company and riling Inspector Blake (Stephen Lewis) who was determind to see the buses ran to time.Stan's lovelife was hindered by the fact he still lived at home with his mother (Cicely Courtneidge and Doris Hare), dowdy sister Olive (Anna Karen) and know-it-all idle brother-in-law Arthur (Michael Robbins). The chemistry was set to create the greatest sitcom of all-time spanning seven TV series and three spin-off films over four years and this website will endeavour to bring some of the flavour of this icon of British TV to you.
