Series 1

Episode 1 - The Early Shift

Chaos is brought to Luxton and District Bus Company when Stan and Jack go on strike with their workmates.Its all unofficial and the Butler household are affected in more ways than one and life isn't easy especially when Stan has to be on picket duty.

Episode 2 - The New Conductor

Stan always gets nervous when he has a new conductor but when a new 'clippie' is put on his bus he couldn't feel better.Problems arise when he brings her home after work hoping to get amorous but his hopes are dashed by nosy brother-in-law Arthur and the rest of the family.

Episode 3 - Olive Takes A Trip

Money is short in the Butler household and Olive decides to take a job as a bus conductress despite Stan's protests.Olive's first shift sees her put aboard Stan's bus and disaster ensues when she gets trapped in the closing doors of the bus then comes down with a bout of travel sickness.

Episode 4 - Bus Driver's Stomach

When the bus company orders every driver to go through a strict medical Stan is worried about his continual stomach pains that he calls 'Bus Driver's Stomach'.Brother-in-law Arthur insists its down to his terrible diet of chips,chips and more chips and Stan's mum agrees and puts him on a diet of prunes and yoghurts.Will Stan be able to stick to the diet?

Episode 5 - The New Inspector

When a vacancy for Inspector comes up at the depot there seems little interest in a job thats seen as a poisoned chalice.The promise of more money for Stan sees him take up the post but he soon realises his friends have started seeing him in a different light and even demote him from the darts team.

Episode 6 - The Canteen

The busmen get the chance to run the depot's canteen by themselves and appoint Stan to take charge.He soon finds things aren't going to plan as he employs an Indian cook who knows how to cook currys and tea but not English food.In desperation Stan gives the job to Olive providing his mum helps out.

Episode 7 - The Darts Match

Stan and Jack are challenged to a darts match by a couple of clippies and their confidence of a win leads them into having a wager with their opponents.Problems arise in preparation for the match though when Stan's favourite darts get ruined when they fall into Olive's stew and he is also distracted by one of his opponent who is an old flame.

The first series of On The Buses (a London Weekend Television Production) was filmed in black and white.The character Mrs. Butler was played by Australian actress Cicely Courtneidge because first choice for the role Doris Hare was unavailable at the time.The first episode aired on the 28th of February 1969.
